The status of Salman Rushdie as a writer has hardly waned. -The Vancouver Sun From the Hardcover edition., Praise for "Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie "Rushdie has written an intensely political novel, infused with recent events, but its emotional scope reaches so far beyond our current crisis and its vision into the vagaries of the heart is so perceptive that one can imagine "Shalimar the Clown. With Salman Rushdie's fascinating novel, Shalimar the Clown I found it rather easy often necessary to suspend disbelief, in part because this is no conventional story but rather an amazing fable that uses the fractious land of Kashmir as a metaphor for the India/Pakistan partition, Hindu/Moslem relations and perhaps the world at large.

Shalimar el Payaso (Spanish) by Salman Rushdie. Shalimar the Clown is the story of Maximilian Ophuls, America’s counterterrorism chief, one of the makers of the modern world; his Kashmiri Muslim driver and subsequent killer, a mysterious figure who calls himself Shalimar the clown; Max’s illegitimate daughter India; and a woman who links them, whose revelation finally explains them all. From one of the leading literary figures of our time, a gripping international tale of love and revenge, and the ancient and modern conflicts from which they spring. Los Angeles, Ambassador Maximilian Ophuls, one of the makers of the modern world, is murdered in broad daylight on his illegitimate daughter India's doorstep, slaughtered by a knife wielded by his Kashmiri Muslim driver, a mysterious figure who calls himself Shalimar the clown. It turns out that Shalimar is an excellent assassin, helped along by his tightrope skills, and by the fact that he is only a hollow shell of a real human being. This section of the novel is particularly difficult, as Rushdie meticulously details the real-life atrocities committed in Kashmir by fundamentalist groups.
